Re: Whiskey
The town which my grandfather left in his mid twenties went dry for the 25 years until 1947 thanks to the Temperance Society and a local election that was held in 1920 under the terms of the Temperance Act (Scotland) of 1913.

My great grandfather was the main distributor of illicit whisky in that town for a quarter of a century. Never met the bloke but I like to think we'd have had a laugh if we'd got pissed together. Went there once and went into his place of employment and his photo was on the wall. Very nice people who welcomed me in and showed me around as they were going about their daily business.

On the subject of whisky itself...

Never had a bottle of single malt that I haven't finished. Probably get through six a year for the past 20 years. Always like.to try something different.

Like beer, they are all good, it's just that some are better than others...

Jura is a good choice for sure.

Most commercial beers, especially lagers, are as bland as anything ....

Re: Whiskey
Good stuff, I enjoy a whisky myself as well.
A few of my favorites are:
Blended: Black Bottle
Malt: Bunnahabhain
If you want to spend a bit of crazy money, try Royal Brackla 21 year old malt, unbelievably good.

Re: Whiskey
Laphroaig , Lagavulin are two of my favourites but it’s all about preference. These two are relatively commercial and some of the more obscure ones are amazing. You just have to find them.

In a whisky bar in Taipei 2004 Euros England v Croatia. I had a bet with Austrian bloke called Hans £400 bottle of 40 year old 40 year old Macallan single malt whisky . I won a drunk with diet coke and ice. Much to the chagrin of the local whisky buffs

Re: Whiskey
I don't drink it, got a gin recomendatuion though, Drumshanbo gunpowder gin, best gin I've tasted by a country mile.

Also got into the cazcabel honey flavoured and coffee flavoured tequilas, the tastes sound terrible, but they are spot on.

Re: Whiskey
Its like saying I like wine what are yoir recommendations?

Scotch has several distinct areas. Islay, Speyside, highlands, lowlands etc. The flavours are everything from campfire to honeyed malt. If you like smooth then speyside’s your go to. If you like smokey then Islay. However within each region there is huge differences between the different distilleries.

I like quite sweet woody scotch and oneI’d recommend in this style is Deanston 12. They use really good quality ex bourbon barrels and the youngest whisky in it is 12 years old. Its really toasty.

Another easy drinker is Highland Park 12. Its slightly smoked but subtle. Lovely honey in the flavour.

In England the Cotswolds distillery is making amazing whisky by doing everything right. They have a number of interesting different types. I’d go for “ Cotswolds Distillery Founder's Choice ”

I never used to like bourbon but have got into it. Try Michters small batch. There’s this lovely woody cherry taste.

If you want something really wild go for ARDBEG UIGEDAIL. Its not a slip down the throat whisky is a grab your tongue and rip it out kind.

For wild I like Laphroaig Lore . Its got both young and old whiskies in it and as a result is very complex. That said, all Laphroaig are wild.

Two cheap whiskies worth trying.

White Horse
Black Bottle

A little harsh but good session whiskies

Re: Whiskey
Another cheap whisky worth trying

Glen Moray Sherry Cask

To be honest all the Glen Morays are excellent. Again slightly sweeter than some but packed full of taste. This one is matured in ex sherry casks so you get these complex fruity flavours from the wood. Most distilleries do sherry cask whiskies and they all use them to blend bug this is both cheap and good value.

Re: Whiskey
I only bother with Islays nowadays. But in this weather you can't go wrong with a decent Irish.
